THE PRIVATE IS POLITICAL

by Silvia Viana
Spain, 2023

A collage of a domestic space with cutouts of various representations of women in popular culture. ‘The private is political’ is a concept that aims to emphasise the interconnections between personal experiences and broader socio-political structures. This idea gained recognition through an influential essay titled ‘The Personal is Political’ written by Carol Hanisch in 1970. Her idea is that individual experiences, particularly those pertaining to gender, race, class, and other social identities, are not isolated or purely personal matters but are deeply influenced and shaped by larger systems of power, discrimination, and societal norms. The artist reflects this by juxtaposing female figures over a bird’s eye view of residential apartments.
