FISHING BY WOMEN

Captured from above, six women clothed in bright fabrics fish with nets in a circle.Their cheerful clothing sets them apart from the muddy flats of low tide and the man in the boat who watches over them. It is common for villagers in South Bengal to fish during low tide. It is the women who venture into the challenging conditions, while a man from the village takes charge of navigating the boat to the river's centre. This collaborative effort may suggest collective labour but it is the women who assume the riskier task of standing in the shallow waters on the river bed. Meanwhile, the man patiently waits on the boat.
